Malaysia seizes 697 units of unapproved retatrutide as Lilly readies its FDA filing
Malaysia's Health Ministry told Parliament it seized 697 units of unregistered retatrutide in 12 raids since 2025. Lilly's triple agonist is still in Phase 3, with a US filing planned for the first quarter of 2027, so no product can be legally sold.
Holds at Phase 3 Mixed or neutral: news, but no net change in prospects.
The readThe seizures do not move retatrutide on the board and say nothing about whether it works or is safe. They do show demand for a Phase 3 peptide running ahead of any legal supply, which puts untested products under the drug's name into circulation before any regulator has reviewed the data.
Malaysia's Health Ministry has seized 697 units of unapproved retatrutide in 12 raids since 2025, Health Minister Dzulkefly Ahmad told Parliament on 2 November. The stock of unapproved retatrutide, which the ministry valued at RM341,000, is a product no regulator anywhere has cleared, because Eli Lilly's weekly triple agonist is still in Phase 3 and has not yet been filed with the FDA. The seizures do not shift the molecule on our board. They do show how far demand for a pipeline peptide has run ahead of any legal supply.
What the Health Ministry told Parliament
Dzulkefly gave the figures during question time in the Dewan Rakyat, the lower house of Malaysia's Parliament, according to The Sun Malaysia. He was answering Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa, the member for Sekijang, who wanted to know if anyone had been arrested over influencer promoted online sales of regulated GLP 1 products, and what tougher steps the government planned. The minister said the ministry's Pharmacy Enforcement Division carried out the raids. Retatrutide has no registration with Malaysia's Drug Control Authority, the report says, so selling, importing, marketing or supplying it in the country is not allowed. The minister added that the product has yet to enter the ministry's list of approved formulations. The published account does not say whether any arrests followed the raids, which was the first part of the question.
Semaglutide made up a smaller part of the count. Dzulkefly said seven enforcement operations against illegal sellers of Ozempic and other semaglutide products had netted 62 units worth RM64,170. The contrast matters because semaglutide is an approved medicine in many markets with a licensed supply chain, while retatrutide is approved nowhere. Even so, the ministry seized more than ten times as many retatrutide units, in 12 raids against seven operations. Earlier ministry figures show the wider effort: over the three years to December 2025, enforcement staff took down 42,639 unapproved medical advertisements on online shopping sites and acted on 13,070 more posted on social media. The report does not break those advertisement figures down by drug class, so they show the scale of online policing rather than the size of the trade in weight loss drugs.

Why retatrutide has no legal route in Malaysia
Malaysia, like most countries, lets a medicine reach patients only after its national regulator registers it. For retatrutide that step is not yet possible in any major market, because Lilly's own plan puts the first US filing in the first quarter of 2027. Outside Lilly's clinical trials and rare special access cases, there is no legitimate supply of the drug. Anything sold online as unapproved retatrutide therefore comes from outside the system that checks identity, purity, sterility and storage. A buyer cannot confirm what a vial holds or how it was made. No test results for the seized products were made public, and the minister did not describe their contents, so it is not known whether they held the molecule at all.

The minister pointed patients to a legal path for GLP 1 treatment instead. He said people who need such therapy can seek clearance through a special drug approval route the ministry already runs, and that it approved 240 such treatment applications from January to September 2026, costing RM2.56 million in total. The report does not say which medicines those approvals covered, and nothing in it suggests retatrutide can be obtained this way. Dzulkefly also said GLP 1 use must rest on a clinician's judgment of each patient's health, degree of obesity and other conditions. He promised closer watch over online shopping sites and social media, though he gave no detail on new penalties, charges or arrests.
Where the retatrutide FDA filing stands
Retatrutide is a weekly injection that acts on three hormone receptors at once, GLP 1, GIP and glucagon, which is why Lilly calls it a triple agonist. In its second quarter results on 5 August 2026, Lilly said its clinical data were now complete enough to back registrations around the world in obesity, obstructive sleep apnea and knee osteoarthritis pain. The company said it plans to submit a Biologics License Application to the FDA in the first quarter of 2027. BioPharma Dive reported that Lilly had earlier listed the drug among possible 2026 submissions before moving the date, and that the company told CNBC it wanted extra time to collect manufacturing and quality control information. That timing means the retatrutide FDA filing is still months away.
The efficacy case is large but comes with trade offs. BioPharma Dive reported that at the highest doses, people with type 2 diabetes in TRIUMPH-2 lost 21 percent of body weight on average at 80 weeks and people with cardiovascular disease in TRIUMPH-3 lost 23 percent, less than in the earlier TRIUMPH-1 study. In the TRANSCEND-T2D-2 trial against Ozempic, our report on dose related side effects found that 7.9 percent of people on the higher dose stopped for adverse events, against 2.7 percent on Ozempic. None of these data have yet been judged by a regulator. There is no approved label, no agreed warning set and no approved dose for anyone to follow.
What illegal GLP 1 sales change for the molecule
On our pipeline board, nothing moves. Retatrutide stays in Phase 3, the signal is flat, and the Malaysian seizures say nothing about whether the drug works or is safe. What they do show is that a molecule's reputation can travel faster than its approval. BioPharma Dive has noted reports of patients buying retatrutide on the black market, and Malaysia now adds a government count from Southeast Asia. Interest from doctors is also running ahead of the data, as our story on weight loss plateau hopes found. The risk for Lilly is that harm from products sold under its drug's name could shape public views before regulators weigh the trials. The minister did not report any such harm.
The figures leave several questions open. The minister did not say where the seized unapproved retatrutide came from, how it was packaged, or whether any sellers now face charges. Nor did he explain how the RM341,000 value was estimated. The ministry gave no sign that any application for retatrutide is before the Drug Control Authority. For readers, the practical point is narrow. An unregistered product cannot be checked by the person who buys it, and illegal GLP 1 sales carry the same problem whether the label says retatrutide or semaglutide. Legitimate access to approved GLP 1 drugs runs through a doctor and national rules, and access to retatrutide today runs only through clinical trials and rare special access.
Conclusion
The Malaysian count of 697 seized units is an enforcement story, not a clinical one, and it leaves retatrutide where it was: in Phase 3, with a US filing planned for early 2027. Until a regulator reviews the data, any unapproved retatrutide on sale is a product no authority has checked. The next markers are Lilly's FDA submission and any further detail from Malaysia's Health Ministry on arrests, charges or where the seized stock came from.
